Tyler Perry's Wackness....

Tyler Perry is at it again...He has released another movie. I was just watching his first film called Diary of a Mad Black Woman.....and I though it was tired and embarrassing. Why is Tyler Perry even making movies? Aren't his plays embarrassing enough? Most of his material has be presented in the same type of plays. The new chitlin circuit. Most of the plays are just Gosploitation. What's up with that? Why are we exploiting God and ourselves?

Back to dissing Perry. One of the main characters in his films is him dressed in drag (see Shenene, Gerldene, but he acts just like the weak comic from Comic View) passing as an old woman that knows everything but still seems to pronounce everything wrong. I've even been told that I sound country a time or two...but this isn't country it just sounds stupid to me. Its nothing more than a man showing his feminine(yes I think he has sugar in his tank) side and acting like a buffoon. I find none of this funny. Those of you that know me, might even find me to be kind of goofy too. So if I find it stupid...I can't see how anyone sees it as being funny. LOL.

Oprah is losing mad cool points from me lately, first the dude with the fake book and now a dude with a fake movie? She seems to think that the characters in his movies are uplifting to the black people, because we all know a Madea. Yeah, that is good for a stand up act. But for a movie, positive characters have to be more than stereotypical one dimensional buffoons. There has to a better way to bring these messages to in film than Perry's tired vehicles. I want more... I'm not saying that I need to see a classic everytime I go to the movies. But how about giving me something that I can at least say is good. Now i rarely ever agree with critics when it comes to black films but this time I am being a critic. Don't waste your money on Tyler Perry, or we will get more and more Family Reunions or Ger Rich Or Die Tryin's. We are regressing people....
Its 2006, I don't need to see full feature length episodes of Good Times. I think its time we expect more from a movie. What about you?

March Madness

If you are a fan of college basketball you might have noticed one big difference in this year's NCAA Tournament, parity. Did anyone really expect the great UConn to get knocked off by CAA's own George Mason? Is this a huge upset or what? Perennial powerhouses like UConn, and North Carolina usually bring the jitters out of smaller scaled programs in the but this year's addition is like a gamblers dream. The lower seeds are winning a high percentage of games and the higher seeds aren't covering the spread. In fact this is the first year that since 1980 that none of the #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.

Is this trend going to continue? We can only hope it does. The big schools are too fat on the hog to really pay attention to the game anymore. They get the high profile players who don't plan on staying in college 4 years. This is what is hurting the game. It is also hurting the USA's Olympic teams also. Players don't have loyalty, they only play for the money. They don't learn how to win the close games. They don't develop the toughness that the tournament helps foster. In the NBA now, there is no heart. Its all about dollars and cents. Too bad most of the kids and young men that play this game don't have a sense of urgency or a will to dig out the tough victories.
